POKOTABI / Matchan
松ちゃん
Ikebukuro's Matchan is a dependable neighborhood Chinese diner open late into the night, offering hearty set meals with raw egg and sides, customizable spicy Matchan ramen, gyoza, and cold beer.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just beyond Ikebukuro's Gekijo-dori, Matchan (松ちゃん) keeps its lights on late into the night, serving as a dependable neighborhood Chinese-style diner for a hearty meal or a post-work drink. With the rich aroma of wok-tossed dishes drifting from the kitchen and an unpretentious, retro dining room, it naturally draws in solo diners and small groups alike.
The first thing that catches the eye is the extensive selection of teishoku (set meal) options. Flavorful stir-fried mains—such as ginger pork, liver with garlic chives, or garlic-accented mapo eggplant—arrive alongside rice, soup, seasoned bean sprouts, a small pickled plum, and a raw egg. Free rice upsizing makes it easy to dig into the richly sauced dishes, and cracking the raw egg over the remaining rice for a tamago kake gohan finish is a distinct highlight of eating here.
Pairing a casual drink with a savory side dish brings out another beloved dimension of classic diner culture. Whether sipping draft beer, bottled Sapporo Lager, Hoppy, or baisu sour, the time passes effortlessly alongside pan-fried gyoza, salt-grilled pork liver, or deep-fried shumai. To close out the meal, the noodle menu caters to any craving, from the soy-sauce-based Matchan Ramen with heat levels ranging from mild to intensely spicy, to topping-rich miso ramen and thick-noodled tsukemen.
Operating until 3:30 a.m. from Monday through Saturday, Matchan stands out as a reassuring spot in Ikebukuro for late-night meals or an unhurried nightcap.
